As dining-out prices soar, the nationwide average selling price of Samgyetang has surpassed 16,000 won. In Seoul, it has exceeded 17,000 won. Even if people want to enjoy chicken instead of Samgyetang, the delivery price for one whole chicken has already exceeded 20,000 won.


On the 12th, the Korea Consumer Agency announced the results of an analysis of the dining-out price of 'Samgyetang,' a popular summer staple, and the selling prices of five related items through the comprehensive price information portal Chamgagyeok. According to the analysis, the nationwide average selling price of Samgyetang in July was 16,014 won, up 1.8% from 15,724 won in the same period last year.


Looking at the yearly trend, the nationwide average selling price of Samgyetang this year was 15,892 won, up 2.0% from last year and 9.3% from 2022. It has increased every year over the past two years.

The prices of Samgyetang ingredients have also all risen. A survey of five ingredients used in Samgyetang (chicken, glutinous rice, fresh ginseng, green onions, garlic) showed that the selling prices of all items increased from June to July, and one item (fresh ginseng) has been rising every month this year.


Compared to last year, prices of all five items increased during the same period, ranging from a minimum of 2.5% to a maximum of 25.7%.


Yearly analysis shows that over the past two years, prices of two items (chicken and green onions) have risen annually, and the average selling prices by item in 2024 increased by at least 4.9% to a maximum of 24.4% compared to 2023, and by at least 14.1% to a maximum of 36.8% compared to 2022.


According to the 'Dining-out Price Information' released by the Korea Consumer Agency on the 9th, the price of one bowl of Samgyetang in Seoul as of last month was 17,038 won, the second highest among the 16 cities and provinces surveyed, following Jeonbuk. This is the first time the average dining-out price for one bowl of Samgyetang in Seoul has surpassed 17,000 won. Next were Gyeonggi at 16,724 won and Gwangju at 16,400 won. Chungbuk was the cheapest at 14,857 won.


Famous Samgyetang restaurants in Seoul, Tosokchon and Goryeo Samgyetang, already charge 20,000 won for a basic bowl of Samgyetang. Wonjo Hosu Samgyetang and Nonhyeon Samgyetang charge 18,000 won.
