Statue of Independence Army Commander Park Sangjin Returns to the Embrace of Ulsan Citizens

Unveiling Ceremony Held at Daldong Culture Park for Liberation Day

Installed Near Ulsan Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower

On the occasion of the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day, the statue of Gohun Park Sangjin, who served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Gwangbokhoe, will return to the embrace of Ulsan citizens.

The city of Ulsan will hold an unveiling ceremony for the statue of Park Sangjin at Daldong Culture Park on the 15th.

Attending the unveiling ceremony will be Ulsan Mayor Kim Dookyum, Acting Chair of the City Council Kim Jongseop, members of the National Assembly, as well as Park Sangjin's great-grandsons Park Junghoon and Park Pilhoon.

The statue of Park Sangjin, which will be unveiled on this day, was originally erected in 1982 by the Ulsan Junior Chamber to commemorate his achievements at JC Hill in Okgyo-dong.

Later, due to the expansion of the Taehwagang riverside road, the statue was relocated to Bukjeong Park in 1998, but Bukjeong Park was subsequently incorporated into the site of the Ulsan Museum of Art.

As a result, it was decided to move the statue to the Jung-gu History and Culture Park, which is being developed in redevelopment zone B04, and it was placed in temporary storage in 2017.

As the redevelopment project was delayed, the statue remained in storage for seven years without finding a permanent location.

Consequently, the city of Ulsan decided it could no longer leave the statue unattended. After searching for a new site, the city decided to relocate it near the Ulsan Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower within Daldong Culture Park, and the unveiling ceremony is being held on this day.

An official from Ulsan City stated, "By relocating the statue of Park Sangjin, a proud independence activist of Ulsan, to Daldong Culture Park, citizens will now be able to encounter Park Sangjin in a more accessible place. We hope that this relocation will further spread the spirit of the independence movement and the culture of honoring patriots."
