Chungnam Provincial Council Member of Democratic Party Urges Withdrawal of Kim Hyungseok's Appointment as Director of Independence Hall

Members of the Democratic Party of Korea in the South Chungcheong Provincial Council have called for the withdrawal of Kim Hyungseok's appointment as Director of the Independence Hall of Korea, who is known as a New Right figure under the Yoon Suk Yeol administration.

On the 13th, they held a press conference at the South Chungcheong Provincial Government and argued, "It is a historical disgrace for someone who denies the history of the independence movement and disregards the national spirit to be in the position of Director of the Independence Hall."

They continued, "From his very first day in office, Director Kim openly revealed his impure intention to take the lead in restoring the honor of pro-Japanese collaborators and to use the Independence Hall as a tool for that purpose," adding, "We once again emphasize that the role of the Director of the Independence Hall is not to trample on the noble spirit of independence activists during the Japanese colonial period or to whitewash the actions of pro-Japanese collaborators."

They stressed, "The government and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs must fully explain the reasons for appointing an unqualified individual and withdraw the appointment," adding, "We sincerely urge them to apologize to the Liberation Association and the descendants of independence patriots."
