President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on the 13th that he has declared special disaster zones for two local governments and four towns and townships, including Beopwon-eup, Jeokseong-myeon, and Jangdan-myeon in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, and Myeoncheon-myeon in Dangjin-si, Chungnam, which suffered large-scale damage due to heavy rain, according to a written briefing by Presidential Office spokesperson Jung Hye-jeon.
President Yoon said, "Although the monsoon season ended late last month, it is regrettable that the affected residents are still facing difficulties."
He then instructed Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min and related ministries to "swiftly carry out facility restoration projects in the affected areas and meticulously provide direct and indirect support such as disaster relief funds for affected residents and various fee reductions."
President Yoon also urged, "Typically, typhoons begin to affect the Korean Peninsula from the end of August, and this year, there is a possibility of more rainfall than usual according to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, so disaster safety authorities should thoroughly prepare emergency response measures accordingly."
Earlier, President Yoon had twice declared 11 local governments that suffered heavy rain damage from the 8th to the 10th of last month as special disaster zones in advance.
The Presidential Office explained regarding this special disaster zone declaration, "It is an additional declaration reflecting the results of a thorough and detailed investigation by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the areas affected by heavy rain from the 16th to the 19th of last month."
