After the suspension of his detention expired, a man in his 40s who had been on the run and staged a hostage situation with a weapon just before being apprehended, eventually turned himself in to the prosecution.
The Changwon District Prosecutors' Office in South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 12th that at around 11:05 p.m. on the 11th, a man identified as Mr. A voluntarily appeared at the situation room of the Changwon District Prosecutors' Office.
The prosecution explained that they had obtained Mr. A's contact information and had repeatedly persuaded him, encouraging his voluntary surrender.
Previously, Mr. A had been on trial in custody on charges including fraud, false accusation, and violation of the Attorney-at-Law Act. From January to April, he was released after being granted suspension of detention for health reasons.
At the end of April, when the suspension of detention expired, he was supposed to return to prison but instead went on the run.
Then, at around 8:37 p.m. on the 9th, when prosecutors raided a motel in Sangnam-dong, Seongsan-gu, Changwon, to arrest him, he threatened a woman identified as Ms. B, who was with him, with a weapon and staged a hostage situation. He then escaped with Ms. B by taxi.
Ms. B was later apprehended by police, who were waiting in response to a cooperation request, when she returned alone to the motel to collect her mobile phone and clothes. After being questioned, she was released to go home.
According to the prosecution, after Mr. A turned himself in, he was handed over to the Changwon Jungbu Police Station, where he is being investigated for the armed hostage situation.
The prosecution plans to execute an arrest warrant for Mr. A as soon as the investigation is completed.
