81 Descendants of Cheonan Independence Patriots Reside Locally
Visited Annually on March 1st and Patriots and Veterans Month
On the 12th, Cha Myungguk, Director of the Welfare and Culture Bureau, visited the family home of the late independence patriots Lee Heechun and Park Hanhong to express gratitude and condolences for the noble sacrifice of the independence heroes.
Cheonan City in South Chungcheong Province expressed its gratitude to the families of independence patriots living in the region ahead of the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day.
On the 12th, Cha Myungguk, Director of the Welfare and Culture Bureau, visited the homes of the bereaved families of the late Lee Heechun and Park Hanhong, who were independence patriots, to convey gratitude and consolation for the noble sacrifices of the independence patriots.
The late Lee Heechun supported the dispatch of independence activists to Manchuria and took the lead in the struggle to connect domestic and overseas independence movements. The late Park Hanhong participated in the independence demonstration in Iljuk-myeon, Anseong-gun, and made selfless sacrifices for the restoration of national sovereignty.
On the same day, Park Geungho, head of Byeongcheon-myeon, also visited the home of Jo Joongsun, the bereaved family member of the late Jo Ssangdong, an independence patriot.
The late Jo Ssangdong participated in the independence demonstration in Yangdae-ri, Ipjang-myeon, on March 20, 1919, and was injured and imprisoned after resisting Japanese military police. In recognition of his contributions, the government posthumously awarded him the Presidential Citation in 1992.
Director Cha Myungguk said, "Today's Republic of Korea exists because of the sacrifices made by independence patriots and their families who devoted themselves to reclaiming our country," and added, "We will do our best to honor the achievements of independence patriots and provide the utmost respect to their families."
Meanwhile, there are currently 81 families of independence patriots residing in Cheonan City. The city conducts visits every year on March 1st and during the Month of Patriots and Veterans to honor and repay the contributions of national merit recipients.
Park Geunho, head of Byeongcheon-myeon, visited the home of Jo Jungsun, a bereaved family member of the late patriot Jo Ssangdong, on the 12th.
