Howard X, a Chinese-Australian known for his resemblance to North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un, was detained by police after filming a video with a man impersonating former U.S. President Donald Trump at the 2024 Paris Olympic football stadium. On the 11th (Korean time), foreign media including the Daily Mail reported that Howard Lee, who uses the pseudonym 'Howard X,' was detained after posting a video of himself cosplaying as Chairman Kim at the Paris Olympics on his social media (SNS).

At the time, he watched the match dressed as Chairman Kim, holding a Winnie the Pooh doll in one hand and a North Korean flag in the other.

On the 10th, Howard Lee posted on his Instagram, "We did not break any laws, but we were detained by French police after this video came out." Howard Lee, a Chinese-Australian, attended the men's football final between France and Spain held at Parc des Princes in Paris the day before, dressed in an outfit mimicking Chairman Kim’s hairstyle, glasses, and black People's Army uniform.


At the time, he was watching the match alongside a man who was impersonating former President Trump with his distinctive hairstyle and outfit. He claimed that French police approached them, checked their passports, and then expelled them from the stadium. He later said that the police escorted and detained them, expressing, "We did not commit any illegal acts."

Earlier, Howard Lee also stirred controversy by appearing at the venue of the women's 54kg boxing semifinal held on the 9th, where North Korea's Bang Chol-mi lost 2-3 by decision to China's Chang Yuan. At that time, he was watching the match dressed as Chairman Kim, holding a Winnie the Pooh doll in one hand and the North Korean flag in the other.


Notably, he was seen cheering for Bang Chol-mi and the North Korean team, but the North Korean athletes ignored him and showed no reaction. Howard Lee became famous for disguising himself to resemble Chairman Kim and frequently appearing at international events and election campaigns. Previously, around June 2018, he was arrested and investigated by police for impersonating Kim Jong-un ahead of the first North Korea-U.S. summit held in Singapore.
