Fiber Sensing is a technology that detects various environmental factors that can affect wired network optical cables. When data is transmitted through optical cables, the phase changes sensitively depending on the surrounding environment of the cable. By monitoring these phase changes, it is possible to identify damage to the wired network or impacts applied to the surroundings.

SK Telecom and Nokia plan to detect unexpected situations caused by earthquakes, climate change, and construction around wired networks to stabilize the wired network in advance. The two companies aim to achieve the first domestic commercialization of Fiber Sensing within this year by accumulating demonstration data based on machine learning on SKT's commercial network. By proactively introducing Fiber Sensing technology, they expect to secure advanced AI capabilities in terms of strengthening network stability.

SK Telecom plans to introduce Fiber Sensing to nationwide wired networks and establish an intelligent pre-response system to minimize damage caused by line cuts at construction sites. It is expected to prevent service disruptions caused by unexpected accidents in advance and provide uninterrupted service.

At the signing ceremony held on the 7th at SKT headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, SK Telecom's Ryu Jeong-hwan, Head of Infrastructure Strategy Technology CT, and Nokia Asia-Pacific President John Harrington, along with other officials from both companies, attended and discussed future cooperation plans.

Ryu Jeong-hwan, Head of Infrastructure Strategy Technology CT at SK Telecom, stated, "We will continue to strive to secure advanced technological capabilities in preparation for the AI era, where sophisticated wired network infrastructure is essential."

John Harrington, President of Nokia Asia-Pacific, said, "We will cooperate to detect and respond to field situations in advance to provide stable services."
