"Why Only My Share?" Voice Phishing Caught by Betrayal of Team Member

Victim's Daughter Impersonated in Text Scam to Embezzle 15 Million Won
Reported by Organization Member Dissatisfied with Distribution... Arrested and Sentenced to Prison

A voice phishing gang member who impersonated the victim's daughter via text message to extort money was caught and sentenced to prison. The cause was the betrayal of another gang member dissatisfied with their small share.

A (32, female), known as a "jangjip (short for account recruiter)" who manages fake bank account recruiters in the voice phishing crime organization, attempted voice phishing using a remote control program around 6:50 p.m. on March 14.

A sent a text message to victim B, impersonating B's daughter, saying, "My phone is broken, so I think I need to use dad's phone," and through chat, induced B to enter four digits.

At the moment B entered the numbers without suspicion, a remote control program was installed on B's phone, and through this, 15.9 million won was transferred from B's bank account to three accounts, including C, the remittance handler of the voice phishing gang.

A distributed 1.8 million won out of the 2 million won of B's stolen money deposited into C's account. A gave 960,000 won to another accomplice and kept 860,000 won for herself.

However, C, who received the smallest amount, became dissatisfied and reported to the investigation agency, leading to A's arrest.

On the 11th, Chief Judge Park Hyunjin of the Criminal Division 2 at Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch announced that A, who was detained and indicted on charges of computer-related fraud, was sentenced to two years in prison with a four-year probation. Additionally, A was ordered to undergo probation and perform 80 hours of community service.

Judge Park stated, "Voice phishing crimes cannot be completed without each person fulfilling their role," and "It is recognized that the crime started by proposing the crime to accomplices first and recruiting accounts to receive the stolen money."

He added, "However, considering that the arrest was made due to the report by an accomplice dissatisfied with the distribution of the stolen money, the actual criminal proceeds were 860,000 won, which is significantly less than the amount of damage stated in the indictment, and that the defendant was detained for four months due to this case, the sentence was determined accordingly."

The prosecution appealed the first trial verdict.
