Cheonan City Assigns Walking Safety Guides to Two Elementary Schools

Cheonan City in Chungnam Province will launch a pilot project to assign pedestrian safety guides at two elementary schools to ensure the safe commute of elementary school students.

On the 8th, the city announced that it would officially begin operating the pedestrian safety guides, who will serve as safety guardians for children during their commute to and from school.

The pedestrian safety guides, consisting of nine members, will be responsible for accompanying lower-grade students during their commute, providing guidance and education on pedestrian safety rules, at Cheonan Neungsoo Elementary School and Cheonan Samgeori Elementary School starting from the 26th.

They will accompany lower-grade students during commute hours, ensure their safety, and prepare for various emergency situations. The pedestrian safety guides will work 2 hours and 30 minutes a day, 15 hours a week, until December, and will be paid at the level of Cheonan City’s living wage.

Before the official activities of the pedestrian safety guides, the city enhanced their expertise by providing training on basic traffic safety rules and the behavioral characteristics of children.

The city expects that this project will help prevent traffic accidents that may occur during children’s commute and ease parents’ concerns about the safety of the school route. Based on the results of the pilot operation, the city plans to consider expanding the project.

Vice Mayor Kim Seokpil said, “Pedestrian safety guides not only protect children from various dangers during their commute but also provide guidance and education on safety rules for different situations, which is expected to greatly help establish traffic safety awareness among lower-grade students.”
