Ambitions for Reducing Communication Costs and Growing Korean Broadcasting Companies

Yoo Sang-im, the nominee for Minister of Science and ICT, stated, "We will accelerate technology development and infrastructure support so that South Korea's world-class semiconductor competitiveness can create synergy with artificial intelligence (AI)."

At the confirmation hearing held by the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee at 10 a.m. on the 8th, Yoo said in his opening remarks, "We will strongly promote policies to achieve global competitiveness in AI semiconductors, advanced bio, and quantum technology fields." Regarding AI semiconductor competitiveness, he added, "We will solidify cooperation with the United States, which is ahead with massive capital and manpower, to build a sustainable AI ecosystem."


Yoo pledged to do his best to make AI a part of everyday life for the public. He said, "We will actively utilize AI not only in industrial sites but also in the daily lives of the people to promote the digital transformation of South Korea’s industries and ensure that the public can tangibly feel the benefits."


Regarding the advanced bio sector, he stated, "We will develop domestic innovation-based technologies and combine them with high-quality data to strengthen the bio value chain," adding, "Externally, we will actively pursue joint research with major R&D clusters in advanced countries such as the United States." On quantum technology, he said, "We will find breakthroughs through strategic investment, focused training of key personnel, and strategic international joint research with global leading countries including the United States."


He also pledged to create a leading R&D ecosystem to lead South Korea as a science and technology powerhouse. Yoo said, "We will innovate the national R&D system and make every effort to enable researchers to conduct research and development in a world-class environment." He also promised to actively promote the dedication of scientists and technologists.


He announced plans to implement livelihood stabilization policies to reduce the burden of communication costs. Yoo said, "We will continue to pursue policies to alleviate household communication expenses so that the public can use high-quality communication services at reasonable prices, and we will enhance network quality and services."


Regarding the broadcasting sector, he said, "We will prepare policies to enable our companies, which face market saturation and competition with global firms, to enter a new growth phase," adding, "We will strive to increase accessibility to digital technologies so that all citizens can equally enjoy the benefits of digital technology."


Finally, Yoo stated, "Drawing on over 30 years of research field experience, I will swiftly advance the challenges we face."
