Seoul Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Su-hee) announced on the 8th that it has designated this month as the period for a comprehensive review of local tax unclaimed refunds and plans to actively return taxes that taxpayers have not claimed.

As of the end of July, the scale of local tax unclaimed refunds in the district amounts to a total of 6,540 cases, with a sum of approximately 366 million KRW. Local tax refunds mainly occur due to reasons such as amendments to laws, erroneous payments caused by double payments, reductions in local income tax following national tax adjustments like comprehensive income tax, and cases such as ownership transfer or scrapping after annual automobile tax prepayment.

Accordingly, the district plans to send out local tax refund notices in bulk and encourage refund applications through public notification text message services and the KakaoTalk channel (SeoulGangdong-guLocalTaxRefund) to support taxpayers in receiving local tax refunds conveniently and promptly.

In addition, the district will promote the ‘Local Tax Refund Account Pre-registration System,’ which immediately pays refunds to accounts pre-registered by taxpayers when refunds occur, aiming to enhance the convenience of refund applications and minimize unclaimed refund amounts.

Kim Gil-young, Head of the Tax Management Division, stated, “The right to claim local tax refunds expires after five years, so please make sure to receive your refund within the deadline, and we encourage you to use the pre-registration system to conveniently receive your refund.”

Applications for the pre-registration system can be made by taxpayers directly registering their refund accounts through the Seoul e-Tax website or by filling out the application form posted on the Gangdong-gu Office website and submitting it to the district tax management division by mail or fax.
