"Apologize to Asian Fans"... Seokyungdeok Protests Adele Over 'Rising Sun Flag Concert'

'Using Rising Sun flag from a former Axis power' fans shocked and criticize
Seo Kyung-duk "We must explain historical background before anger"

Controversy arose when a Rising Sun flag appeared at the concert of global pop star Adele (36) held in Germany, prompting Professor Seokyeongdeok from Sungshin Women's University to sharply demand, "Apologize to Asian fans." On the 7th, Professor Seo said, "The use of the Rising Sun flag by global pop stars continues," adding, "Instead of just condemning and expressing anger, it is more important to accurately inform about the historical background of the Rising Sun flag to prevent its future use."

He explained in a protest email to Adele's side, "The Rising Sun flag was the banner Japan prominently displayed during its invasions of various Asian countries in the past, symbolizing Japanese militarism and imperialism," and stated, "Reusing the Rising Sun flag is tantamount to denying the history of Japan's aggressive wars." He urged, "Since this act reminds Asians of the horrors of war, (Adele) must sincerely apologize to Asian fans."

Earlier, British pop star Adele held a solo concert on the 2nd (local time) at a special stadium in Munich, Germany. At the venue, a massive 220-meter-long outdoor LED screen aiming for a Guinness World Record was installed, attracting attention. However, when Adele performed the song "Rumor Has It," a black-and-white Rising Sun flag appeared on the screen behind her, sparking controversy. The criticism intensified especially because this occurred in Germany, a World War II perpetrator country. The German government legally prohibits the use of Nazi symbols such as the swastika.

Korean fans responded with comments such as, "This reveals Westerners' ignorance," "What does that song have to do with the Rising Sun flag?" "Why the Rising Sun flag in Germany of all places?" "People need to be informed that the Rising Sun flag is equivalent to the Nazi symbol in Asia," and "Why not use the Nazi flag instead?"

Controversies over overseas musicians using the Rising Sun flag have been ongoing. In 2022, Maroon 5 faced criticism for including the Rising Sun flag pattern as the background on their official website while announcing additional world tour dates. Additionally, pop stars such as Led Zeppelin, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, and Anne-Marie have been involved in controversies for using the Rising Sun flag pattern. Adele's side has not issued any particular statement regarding this controversy.
