BMW Recalls 113,197 Units Across 98 Models
Hyundai Recalls 43,926 Units Across 2 Models
"BMW Defects May Be Fewer Than Recall Volume"
It was found that 90.8% of this month's vehicle recall volume consists of 98 models from BMW Korea and 2 models from Hyundai Motor Company. These vehicles are subject to voluntary corrective action due to the possibility of airbag malfunction.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 7th that 172,976 units of 103 models manufactured or sold by BMW Korea, Hyundai Motor Company, and others will undergo voluntary corrective action. Among them, 157,123 units are vehicles from BMW Korea and Hyundai Motor Company.
113,197 units of 98 models, including the BMW 320d, will be recalled starting from the 8th due to the possibility that the airbag may cause injury to the driver. This is because when the steering wheel is replaced, the internal compressed gas propellant that activates the airbag deforms, causing the airbag to deploy with excessive pressure.
An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated, "It is difficult to say that BMW vehicles are being recalled due to a production defect." He added, "If the steering wheel is replaced with a genuine part for the respective model, there is no problem, but if it is replaced with a steering wheel from a sports model, there is a possibility of airbag issues. Since it is difficult to determine whether the airbag problem is due to the owner's arbitrary steering wheel replacement or a vehicle defect, corrective action is being taken for now."
He continued, "In this situation, it is unknown how many actual defective units will be found," adding, "BMW says there will be very few units with manufacturing defects."
43,926 units of 2 models, including the Hyundai Santa Fe, will be recalled starting from the 16th due to the possibility that the airbag may not operate properly.
38 units of the Hyundai Xcient FCEV will undergo corrective action starting from the 14th due to possible steering system malfunctions. This is caused by a manufacturing defect in the fixing nut of the steering system component.
52 units of the KG Smart110E will undergo corrective action starting from the 10th due to defective connecting parts within the steering system.
In addition, 15,763 units of the Kia Soul are currently being recalled since the 5th due to the possibility of fire caused by insufficient durability of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The HECU is a component that controls the hydraulic pressure of the brakes.
Meanwhile, whether your vehicle is subject to recall and the specific defect details can be checked by entering the vehicle number and chassis number at the Automobile Recall Center.
