Gyeonggi Province will open a university focused on advanced departments such as robotics in the Third Pangyo Techno Valley by 2030.
On the 7th, Gyeonggi Province held a 'Briefing Session for Attracting Advanced Field Universities to the Third Pangyo Techno Valley' at the Pangyo Global Business Center to share this information.
The Third Pangyo Techno Valley is a public-private integrated knowledge industry center to be constructed on a 73,000㎡ site within the 'Seongnam Geumto Public Housing District,' with a total floor area of 500,000㎡ and an investment of 1.7 trillion KRW, scheduled to begin construction in 2025.
Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon presented the blueprint for the Third Pangyo Techno Valley in January, emphasizing 'Work (職), Residence (住), Enjoyment (樂), and Learning (學),' and announced plans to attract domestic and international universities with advanced departments to secure stable talent and strengthen expertise.
The area available for lease is 33,000㎡ (including basement floors) within the Seongnam Geumto Public Housing District, and only universities located in the metropolitan area's regulated overcrowding zone with plans to relocate departments related to advanced industries such as semiconductors, robotics, artificial intelligence, gaming, and information and communication technology (ICT) can apply.
The Seongnam Geumto Public Housing District is designated as a regulated overcrowding zone under the Metropolitan Area Readjustment Planning Act, and universities within this zone can only be located there after approval by the Metropolitan Area Readjustment Committee. Twelve universities attended the briefing, including Konkuk University, Kyung Hee University, Korea University, Kwangwoon University, Sangmyung University, Sogang University, Sungkyunkwan University, Sejong University, Soongsil University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Hansung University, and Ajou University.
Gyeonggi Province is also promoting the supply of self-sufficient facility sites to attract leading companies (anchor companies) in advanced industries such as system semiconductors and AI to the Third Pangyo Techno Valley. The province plans to complete the selection of priority negotiation universities and leading companies through a public contest by November, with the contest held between August and September.
If selected as a priority negotiation university, the university will establish a relocation and establishment plan and begin the approval process with the Ministry of Education. It is expected that the university relocation plan will be approved by the end of 2025 at the earliest. Once the relocation plan is approved, a lease contract for classrooms (buildings) will be signed between Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) and the university, and GH will directly construct and supply the school by 2029.
Gyeonggi Province plans to create a learning environment for about 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, aiming for the university to open in 2030.
Park Hyun-seok, Director of Urban Policy at Gyeonggi Province, said, "We expect it to be established as a genuine global convergence cluster by introducing leading companies, research institutes, mid-sized companies, and startup support measures, including the university." He added, "Following the Third Pangyo, we will transplant this model to the 3rd New Town and other Gyeonggi Techno Valleys to make Gyeonggi Province the capital of advanced industries."
