Hanwha Systems announced on the 7th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Seoul National University at the Seoul National University campus in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, the previous day for industry-academic joint research in the defense industry and information and communication technology (ICT)·AI-based space sector.
Hanwha Systems will select detailed research topics that contribute to strengthening core capabilities in defense and ICT linked to space and AI technologies. It will facilitate technical exchanges and cooperation necessary for students' smooth research and development (R&D).
Seoul National University will collaborate with Hanwha Systems to conduct domestic and international academic research and related technology development with high industrial value and work together to achieve results.
Projects planned to be carried out until 2029 include the design of payloads for low Earth orbit communication satellites, network technologies for 6th generation mobile communication (6G) systems and satellite network integration, advancement of object recognition AI technologies used in ship navigation and autonomous driving, and development of autonomous unmanned system jamming countermeasure systems.
Students with outstanding research performance will be provided opportunities such as scholarships and recruitment connections.
Yoo Hong-rim, president of Seoul National University, said, "It is very meaningful to have the opportunity for Seoul National University talents to collaborate with Hanwha Systems, which is emerging as a global defense and ICT company in the era of technological sovereignty," adding, "I hope the scope of cooperation will expand."
Uh Seong-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Systems, said, "Through joint research, Hanwha Systems can improve its technological capabilities, and Seoul National University can nurture core talents in future industries," adding, "We will pursue various forms of human cooperation with young talents to gain innovative synergy."
Hanwha Systems has been realizing government-use space internet since November last year through the "Commercial Low Earth Orbit Satellite-Based Communication System Project," which is the first in Korea to build a low Earth orbit communication network suitable for the military. It also possesses its own AI platform capable of responding to demands from various industries such as finance, manufacturing, and services.
