Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon urged the reinstatement of former Gyeongnam Province Governor Kim Kyung-soo ahead of the special pardon on August 15, Liberation Day.
On the 7th, Governor Kim Dong-yeon posted on his social media (SNS), stating, "I urge the reinstatement of former Governor Kim Kyung-soo," and argued, "'Pardoning my side' and 'selective pardons' have already been done enough."
He continued, "This August 15 special pardon must be different," emphasizing, "It should align with the principles of fairness, common sense, and national unity emphasized by President Yoon."
In particular, he warned, "If selective pardons happen again, the path to unity will become even more distant," advising, "This is not the time to delay with petty political calculations."
Furthermore, he added, "Politics is heading toward polarization," and "Inclusive politics and politics of unity are urgently needed. I hope the reinstatement of former Governor Kim Kyung-soo can be the turning point."
Former Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo was sentenced to two years in prison for the Druking comment manipulation case and was pardoned in December 2022, but he has not been reinstated, so his eligibility to run for public office is restricted until December 2027, preventing him from running in public elections.
