Yongsan-gu to Develop 2km Section by October This Year
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) announced on the 7th that it will create a climate-responsive urban forest along a 2km section of national land by the above-ground railway between Ichon Station and Seobinggo Station (around 241-37 Seobinggo-dong) by October this year.
The urban forest, created by utilizing idle spaces along the railway, aims to improve the urban landscape and respond to the climate crisis by mitigating urban heat islands and heatwaves, absorbing carbon, and reducing fine dust. The project budget is 460 million KRW.
The district plans to plant 12,000 trees of species recommended by the Korea Forest Service and Seoul City for fine dust reduction, including Cornus, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Vitex.
The district analyzed the 2km project site by planting type and location, dividing it into five types, and will create three types of forests according to the characteristics of each section: multi-layered and multi-tiered fine dust reduction forests, rock gardens under bridge piers, and attractive gardens within green belts.
District Mayor Park Hee-young said, “We are creating a healing forest where nature and daily life can coexist along roads and railways with heavy vehicle traffic,” adding, “By establishing the ‘Seobinggo-ro Green Forest Path’ considering both function and aesthetics, we aim to provide residents with a pleasant environment and set a model case for responding to climate change.”
