The 12th World Japanese Military ‘Comfort Women’ Memorial Day event will be held on the 10th at Hwaseong Haenggung Square in Suwon. The 11th World Memorial Day event was held in 2012 in Taiwan.

Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day (August 14) is a national memorial day established to honor the victims of Japanese military sexual slavery. August 14 marks the day when Kim Hak-soon (1924?1997), a victim of Japanese military sexual slavery, first testified about her experience. On August 14, 1991, Grandma Kim was the first surviving comfort woman to publicly testify about the abuse.

The event is hosted and organized by the Suwon Peace Butterfly and the Suwon Peace Statue 10th Anniversary Project Promotion Committee, and will include a memorial ceremony, cultural performances, exhibitions, and experiential activities.

The memorial ceremony includes greetings from Lee Joo-hyun, Executive Director of Suwon Peace Butterfly; congratulatory speeches by Kim Hyun-soo, First Vice Mayor of Suwon, and Lee Jae-sik, Chairperson of Suwon City Council; and the screening of a video titled “Grandma An Jeom-soon and the Peace Monument,” featuring the late An Jeom-soon (1928?2018), a peace and women’s rights activist.

The cultural performances include ▲ Part 1: 招魂 (Chohon, Soul Summoning) ▲ Part 2: Record of Memory ‘Suna’ ▲ Part 3: ‘Today, We’ and there will also be exhibitions and experiential events such as the 10th anniversary exhibition of the Peace Statue and making sky flowers.
