KT, 'Korea's First' GSMA Open Gateway API Certification Obtained

KT Develops Open API Applicable Globally
Functions for Financial Crime Prevention and Customized Communication Quality Improvement

KT announced on the 7th that it has become the first in Korea to officially obtain certification from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Open Gateway certification program.

The Open Gateway is a service-oriented future network advocating an open application programming interface (API) environment. It aims to standardize the API specifications of each telecom operator to enable efficient system integration between service developers and global telecom companies. Service developers can distribute their services to the global market with a single development effort without needing to develop separately for each telecom operator.

The APIs certified this time by KT include a total of four types, such as three Anti-Fraud APIs and the QoD (Quality on Demand) API.

The three Anti-Fraud APIs can determine abnormal use of mobile phones by checking SIM card change history or roaming status. They are used in the US, Europe, South America, China, and other regions to prevent financial crimes such as SIM swapping.

The QoD API provides a function that allows users to enhance communication quality whenever desired. It is utilized in video transmission in the US and Europe and may be applied in the future to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or remote driving for shared taxis.

Meanwhile, KT, as the GSMA chair company, was the first in Korea to participate in the 'GSMA Open Gateway Initiative' established in September 2022. KT is also working on API development for Open Gateway integration through cooperation among telecom operators in the SCFA, a consultative body among telecom operators in Korea, China, and Japan.

Jong-sik Lee, Head of KT Network Research Institute (Senior Executive Director), said, "We will continue to actively cooperate with GSMA to lead global network technology and strive to build a prosperous network ecosystem."
