Shinan-gun "Promotes World Heritage Value"... Successful Ecological Picnic Program

Introduction to Shinan Mudflat Registered as a World Heritage Site... From Safety Education to Hands-on Experience

Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) announced on the 6th that it conducted an ecological picnic, one of the Shinang Mudflat World Heritage utilization programs, with foreign students from the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions to globalize the Shinan Mudflat, a World Heritage site.

The ecological picnic, held on the 29th of last month, provided education and field trips about the Shinan Mudflat, a World Natural Heritage site, to foreign elementary and middle school students in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.

The program began with safety education, followed by a tour of Shinan-gun’s Purple Island, where participants walked along the mudflats while receiving theoretical education. At Dunjang Experience Village, students directly caught benthic animals in the mudflats, learning about the conservation and utilization of the World Heritage mudflats.

Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “The Shinan Mudflat, preserved as the livelihood of our residents, has been recognized as the world’s best natural environment and registered as a World Natural Heritage site. Therefore, solid education on its importance and conservation management is necessary from elementary and middle school through basic education.” He added, “We will strive to expand education not only for students within the jurisdiction but also nationwide through continuous basic education.”

Meanwhile, this ecological picnic is part of the World Heritage utilization programs, a project selected through a national heritage agency contest. Shinan-gun has been selected for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024 to promote this project.

In collaboration with the Shinan Office of Education and the Jeonnam branch of the Korea Cultural Promotion Association, regular and after-school education (experiential learning) on the importance and excellence of the Shinan Mudflat, a World Natural Heritage site, is being conducted for elementary school students within Shinan-gun.
