‘Nicotine Regulation’ Bill Selected
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced on the 6th that Lee Chaeyoung, a student at Pohang Jecheol Jigok Elementary School, received the Speaker's Grand Prize at the 20th Korea Children's National Assembly.
The National Assembly Training Institute accepted applications in March from schools wishing to participate in the Children's National Assembly, aiming to provide students with hands-on experiences of democracy outside the classroom and opportunities for role-based learning. This year, amid the fervor of the 22nd National Assembly elections, 862 club members from 117 schools nationwide participated, submitting a total of 103 legislative proposals and 61 questionnaires. Among these, 17 outstanding legislative proposals and 5 outstanding questionnaires from elementary schools were ultimately selected.

Lee Chaeyoung, a member of the Children's National Assembly Research Club at Pohang Jecheol Jigok Elementary School, presented a legislative proposal titled 'Regulation of Synthetic Nicotine and Ban on Tobacco Sales within Educational Environment Protection Zones' and participated in a Q&A session at the standing committee on the 26th of last month.
As a result of presentations by the three standing committees, Lee Chaeyoung's legislative proposal was selected as one of the seven outstanding proposals and was presented at the plenary session of the National Assembly, where it ultimately received the honor of the Speaker's Grand Prize.
Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Office of Education, stated, "I extend my congratulations and gratitude to Lee Chaeyoung for highlighting the importance of protecting students' health and learning environments through this legislative proposal," and added, "I hope that children will continue to take an interest in local issues and actively participate in legislative experience activities, such as creating real legislative proposals through dialogue, compromise, debate, and discussion, so that they may grow into great contributors to the nation and society."
