Busan Special Judicial Police Launch Special Food Safety Crackdown Ahead of Chuseok Holiday

From the 12th, One-Month Inspection of Food Hygiene Management at Seongsu Food Manufacturing and Sales Companies

Strict Measures Planned for Companies Caught in Illegal Acts, Including Criminal Charges According to Regulations

The Busan City Special Judicial Police will conduct a special food safety inspection for one month starting from the 12th, ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

Busan Special Judicial Police Launch Special Food Safety Crackdown Ahead of Chuseok Holiday Special Investigation on Food Safety Enforcement.

This inspection is planned to check the overall food hygiene management status of manufacturers and sellers of popular holiday foods in the city, such as meat, fruit, rice cakes, and sesame oil, so that citizens can purchase these items with confidence.

The main focus of the inspection includes: ▲false labeling of origin ▲manufacturing or selling without permits or notification ▲violations of storage standards such as keeping frozen products refrigerated ▲distribution or sale of products past their consumption date, and other illegal activities that may occur during the holiday season.

In particular, the inspection will strictly target violations of origin labeling, especially for agricultural, livestock, and marine products, for which demand surges during Chuseok and the price gap between domestic and imported goods is expected to increase illegal distribution.

The Special Judicial Police plan to take strict measures such as seizure and criminal prosecution against businesses found to have violated the law during this inspection, in accordance with relevant regulations.

▲If false origin labeling is found, offenders may face up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million won under the Act on Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Marine Products; ▲violations of food preservation standards or specifications may result in up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million won under the Food Sanitation Act; ▲distribution or sale of products past their consumption date may result in up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won under the Food Sanitation Act.

Lee Joonseung, Busan City Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs, said, "By intensively inspecting manufacturers and sellers of popular holiday foods with increased consumption ahead of Chuseok, we expect to provide citizens with safer food for the holiday," adding, "If illegal activities threatening citizens' safety are detected during this inspection, we will enforce strong penalties according to the relevant laws."

The city’s Special Judicial Police are accepting citizen reports regarding illegal activities related to origin labeling or food hygiene.
