Former National Assembly member Choi Jae-hyung (68, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 13), a former family court chief judge, has been appointed as the legal representative for No So-young, director of the Art Center Nabi, in the Supreme Court appeal of the divorce lawsuit against SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won.
Following Chairman Choi’s side hiring Hong Seung-myeon, a former senior judicial research judge of the Supreme Court and former chief judge of the Seoul High Court (60, class 18), and additionally appointing lawyers from the law firm Yulchon to overturn the second trial ruling, attention is focused on whether the legal team led by former lawmaker Choi will successfully defend No.
According to the legal community on the 5th, former lawmaker Choi joined No’s legal team on the 1st alongside Kang Myung-hoon, representative lawyer of the law firm Hajung (68, class 13). Former lawmaker Choi and lawyer Kang, alumni of Kyunggi High School and Seoul National University Law School, are known to be friends for 50 years.
In a statement released to the media that day, former lawmaker Choi said, "I was aware of No So-young’s lawsuit details through media reports and recently received a request from No So-young to take on the appeal case."
He explained the reason for taking the case, saying, "After reviewing the judgment and speaking directly with No So-young, I understood well that she had made efforts to preserve the family. I judged that helping such efforts receive a legally just evaluation would contribute to maintaining the basic order of a healthy society by renewing awareness of the importance of family and the sanctity of marriage."
Former lawmaker Choi served as a military judicial officer and began his judicial career in 1986 as a judge at the Seoul District Court Eastern Branch. He later served as a judge at the Seoul High Court, chief judge of the Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch, professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, and chief judge at the Seoul District Court, Daegu High Court, and Seoul High Court. From September 2012 to February 2014, he concurrently served as chief judge of the Daejeon Family Court while serving as chief judge of the Daejeon District Court, and from February 2014 to February 2015, he was chief judge of the Seoul Family Court.
Afterwards, former lawmaker Choi moved to the Seoul High Court as a chief judge, then left the judiciary after serving as head of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, and was appointed chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection in January 2018. He resigned in June 2021, six months before the end of his term, joined the People Power Party, and also ran as a preliminary candidate for the presidential election. In March 2022, he ran and was elected in the Jongno by-election, and served as chair of the People Power Party’s Innovation Committee and Human Rights Committee.
