Suspension from Position Following Investigation Initiation
An active police superintendent-level officer has been booked by the police on charges of assaulting a police officer belonging to a local police station while intoxicated.
On the 5th, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that Superintendent A was booked on charges including obstruction of official duties for assaulting a police officer working at a local police station while intoxicated.
Superintendent A, who was serving as a team leader in the Criminal Division of the Seocho Police Station in Seoul, is accused of assaulting a police officer from the Banpo Local Police Station who was dispatched to the scene last November while intoxicated.
The police launched an investigation after receiving a tip that Superintendent A had not been booked and that the incident had been concealed within the local police station. Employees of the Banpo Local Police Station at the time, suspected of concealing the incident, were also booked.
Superintendent A, who was a police inspector at the time, was promoted this year and has been serving as the head of the Criminal Division at a police station under the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency. After receiving notification of the investigation against Superintendent A, the Gyeonggi Nambu Agency suspended him from his position.
On the 17th of last month, the police conducted a search and seizure at Seocho Police Station and Banpo Local Police Station to secure related materials and are verifying the facts, including whether there was an actual attempt to cover up the incident and whether there were any orders or involvement from higher-ups.
