Yeongdeungpo-gu, Additional Safe Return Home Streets Established

Additional 'Safe Return Paths' Created Near Yeongdeungpo Station for Nighttime Safety of Women and Students

Yeongdeungpo-gu, Additional Safe Return Home Streets Established

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has additionally established ‘Safe Return Paths’ in vulnerable alleyways around Yeongdeungpo Station to create safe nighttime passage and prevent crime.

‘Safe Return Paths’ are routes that improve safety infrastructure in vulnerable areas such as dark or secluded alleyways, allowing residents to walk safely even late at night. They have received great positive feedback not only from women but also from students returning home after late-night studies.

The district, in consultation with the police, has additionally established ‘Safe Return Paths’ to ensure the safety of residents returning home late at night. This safety network closely monitors residents’ daily lives to narrow blind spots in safety and create an environment where residents can feel secure.

The newly added area is the alleyway connecting the Yeongdeungpo Station overpass to residential areas (Gyeongin-ro 94-gil ~ Yeongsin-ro 9na-gil ~ Yeongsin-ro 17-gil). Although this area is near a major commercial district, narrow and dark alleys extend into densely populated residential areas, making it a place in need of nighttime pedestrian environment improvements.

The district applied Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to this area and completed the installation of safety facilities such as emergency bells connected to the CCTV control center, location guide signs to assist 112 emergency calls, and ground lighting (logoprojectors) that brightly illuminate dark night paths.

In particular, the district enhanced safety with ‘Safety Guide Lights (solar-powered markers).’ These ‘Safety Guide Lights (solar-powered markers)’ are ground lighting devices that automatically illuminate when ambient brightness falls below a certain level due to sunset or rain, guiding the way. They help residents walking the streets clearly and brightly recognize their surroundings. The logoprojectors also apply various colors and vivid patterns to make them highly visible. LED lighting was installed on emergency bell signs that are not visible at night to improve visibility.

Additionally, patrols by the nearby police precinct have been strengthened to further create ‘safer alleyways.’

The district expects that the establishment of ‘Safe Return Paths’ will alleviate the psychological anxiety of residents returning home late at night and suppress criminal intent through natural surveillance effects.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We have additionally established ‘Safe Return Paths’ to brightly illuminate dark night paths and respond quickly in case of dangerous situations for residents who feel anxious about returning home late. Since safety is directly linked to improving quality of life, we will thoroughly install safety facilities to add peace of mind to residents’ daily safety.”
