Shattered Large Bills Taken to the Bank... Employees Who Created a Miracle

Four Bank Employees All Matched in 22 Days on the 22nd

A Chinese woman suffering from depression has become a topic of interest after restoring 6 million won worth of torn banknotes at a local bank within 22 days.

On the 4th, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) covered the story of employees at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) Kunming branch in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, who recently restored a large amount of damaged banknotes. In June, a woman surnamed Zhang restored a considerable amount of damaged banknotes at the ICBC branch in Kunming, Yunnan Province, southwestern China.

These banknotes were torn by Zhang's sister-in-law. At the time, her sister-in-law was suffering from depression and often damaged items. After her passing, Zhang collected the pieces of the banknotes at the request of her younger brother, who is raising four children alone, and headed to the bank.

In China, banks are required to exchange incomplete or stained banknotes free of charge. However, other banks reportedly refused because it was difficult to piece together all the fragments. Zhang explained the reason for entrusting the bank with the restoration, saying, "My brother's life is not easy, and if the money can be exchanged, it would be a great help, so I decided to try my luck."

Eventually, the ICBC Kunming branch accepted Zhang's request. The bank then assigned four employees to start the task of piecing the banknotes together. One bank employee said, "It was the first time I had seen banknotes torn into so many pieces," adding, "There were more than 100,000 pieces, some smaller than a fingernail." Another employee said, "There were three different types of banknotes, which was quite confusing at first."

After dedicating 22 days to the restoration, the four employees succeeded in restoring all the banknotes, which were valued at 32,000 yuan (approximately 6.1 million won). Zhang is reported to have sent a banner to the bank expressing her gratitude, with the phrase "Caring for people's difficulties and solving problems warms the heart."
