Somali police reported, "32 civilians were killed and 63 were injured." Some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
Immediately after the attack, the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility through its own radio broadcast. Al-Shabaab, which aims to establish an Islamic fundamentalist state, has carried out guerrilla-style attacks and terrorism targeting the government, military, and civilians since pledging allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2010. Last month, an explosion occurred at a restaurant in Mogadishu filled with football fans watching the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2024) final, killing 11 people.
Lido Beach is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Mogadishu. Photos and videos posted on social media show people at the beach running away in panic as gunshots ring out, or lying on the sand bleeding and screaming.
