Statement on Impeachment Passage on the 2nd
"Voluntary Resignation Vicious Cycle Must Not Continue"
"Hope for Minimizing Broadcasting and Communications Policy Gaps"
Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), stated on the 2nd, "I intend to stand firm against the tyranny of impeachment proposed by the major opposition party."
On the same day, after the impeachment motion against her passed in the National Assembly, Chairperson Lee released a statement saying, "We can no longer continue the vicious cycle of impeachment motions and voluntary resignations."
She added, "The unfairness of the impeachment motion will be revealed during the impeachment trial process."
She expressed regret over the crisis that the KCC’s operations face due to the passage of the impeachment motion on that day.
She also regarded the resignations of the former chairperson and vice-chairperson as sacrifices made to prevent the suspension of KCC operations caused by politically motivated impeachment.
Finally, Chairperson Lee said, "I hope that the unprecedented impeachment crisis of the KCC chairperson will minimize any gaps in broadcasting and communications policy," and added, "I will sincerely participate in the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial and do my best to ensure that the KCC can return to normal operations as soon as possible."
Below is the full statement from Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission.
I am Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission.
I deeply regret the crisis facing the KCC’s operations following the passage of the impeachment motion against me in the National Assembly today.
Since November 2023, there have been three attempts to impeach the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the KCC, along with three voluntary resignations. I believe the resignations of the former chairperson and vice-chairperson were sacrifices made to prevent the suspension of the KCC’s operations caused by politically motivated impeachment. However, we can no longer continue this vicious cycle of ‘impeachment motions and voluntary resignations.’
It is now time to end this vicious cycle. As Chairperson of the KCC, I intend to stand firm against the tyranny of impeachment proposed by the major opposition party. The unfairness of the impeachment motion will be revealed during the impeachment trial process.
I hope that the unprecedented impeachment crisis of the KCC chairperson will minimize any gaps in broadcasting and communications policy. I will sincerely participate in the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial and do my best to ensure that the KCC can return to normal operations as soon as possible.
