Emphasizing the Importance of Orange for Safety
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 2nd that it will promote the ‘Safe Color Campaign’ from the 5th to the 18th to prevent water leisure accidents during the peak season, spread a culture of safety, and raise awareness about maritime safety.
The representative life jacket color, ‘orange,’ is designated as a safety color according to the Korean Industrial Standards, and is mainly used for accident prevention, hazard areas, and emergency guidance due to its high visibility.
Last year, the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency selected ‘orange’ as the safety color on the 10th anniversary of the Coastal Safety Day legal commemoration, increasing the importance and awareness of coastal safety.
At the seven police substations under Mokpo Maritime Police jurisdiction, as part of the ‘Safe Color Campaign,’ they urge water leisure clubs and participants to conduct safety checks and follow safety rules before departure, and present keyrings shaped like orange kickboards (swimming boards). The back of the keyring displays safety rules, designed to help recall the rules in daily life.
Over the past three years (2021?2023), a total of 104 water leisure accidents occurred in the jurisdiction, with 83 cases (80%) happening during the peak water leisure season (May to October).
In particular, among the 11 water leisure accidents that occurred during this year’s peak season, 10 cases (91%) were due to engine failure or drifting accidents, making pre-departure safety inspections essential.
A Mokpo Maritime Police official said, “We are conducting the campaign targeting water leisure users to promote the perception that ‘orange means safety,’” and added, “We ask for your participation in raising awareness of safety accidents and spreading a maritime safety culture.”
