Dexter Studio announced on the 2nd that it presented its VFX pipeline integrated with Open USD and its in-house virtual production studio D1 project case at SIGGRAPH 2024.
Held over five days from the 28th of last month to the 1st in Denver, Colorado, USA, SIGGRAPH is the world's largest computer graphics conference and boasts the highest prestige in the industry. This year, it attracted significant attention with a dialogue between NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
At this event, the company was the only Korean studio to collaborate with the global software company Autodesk and served as a speaker in the Vision Series session. Autodesk explored how generative artificial intelligence (AI) enhances creativity, the direction the industry should take with open and connected workflows, and invited global visual effects studios to highlight their representative cases. Dexter Studio was represented by Director Seung Jegal, Head of the VFX Division, and Director Jonghyun Jin, Head of Production Management Division.
Director Jegal explained that after applying Autodesk Maya and Open USD to their internal VFX pipeline, data volume and input time were reduced, maximizing efficiency. Maya is an animation and visual effects software released by Autodesk, and Open USD is a 3D technology language developed by Pixar and distributed as open source.
He stated, “Behind the high-quality visual effects produced by Dexter is a systematic and advanced pipeline that plays a central role,” and added, “We judged that the process improvements for adapting to changes in the work environment and enhancing efficiency would be the most beneficial theme for industry professionals.”
Director Jin also provided a detailed introduction to the virtual production case using Korea’s first ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects) VP technology in the film The Moon. He focused on analyzing trial and error and key points based on actual experience, sharing the setup process and structural flow of their in-house virtual studio D1.
