Utilization of Wood Crushing Site... Third Award in the Construction Field
Odong Forest Library is an eco-friendly building constructed on the site of a wood crushing plant that had been shut down due to noise and dust. Its unique and beautiful exterior is designed to resemble the Odong Neighborhood Park trail, and large windows bring the forest scenery inside the library, making it a popular destination for many citizens. Seoul Seongbuk-gu Odong Forest Library, known as the "most beautiful library in the country," won the Grand Prize at the "42nd Seoul Metropolitan Government Architecture Awards" hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
Odong Forest Library is a 430㎡ single-story library located in Odong Neighborhood Park in Hawolgok-dong, one of Seongbuk-gu's representative residential parks. It was designed to embody the park's footpath and serves as a living and cultural hub encompassing reading, walking, and community activities. Architect Jang Yoon-gyu of Unsaengdong Architectural Office, who has been active as a district village architect, participated from the planning stage, and the library opened in May last year.
This architectural award for Odong Forest Library is the third, following the 46th Korean Institute of Architects Awards last year and the Special Prize in the Completion Category at the 21st Korea Wooden Architecture Competition.
On the 24th, the city held an online and offline public presentation of nine award candidates at City Hall and selected one Grand Prize, two Excellence Awards, five Merit Awards, and one Jury Special Prize. The award ceremony and exhibition of the winning works will be held at the Seoul Architecture Festival in October this year. The city will conduct an online public vote for all nine award-winning works throughout August and select two works with the most votes to receive the "Citizen Sympathy Special Award."
District Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, "Odong Forest Library is an eco-friendly building that utilizes the site of a wood shredding plant that had ceased operation due to noise and dust, and its structure brings the forest inside the library, making it a landmark visited not only by Seongbuk-gu residents but also citizens nationwide. We aimed to create a space close to citizens' daily lives where they can enjoy culture and healing, and all departments did their best, so I am very pleased that our efforts have been recognized."
The district is also promoting the establishment of the "Gaeunsan Forest Library," where residents can enjoy books and relaxation, in Gaeunsan Neighborhood Park, which is frequently visited by Seongbuk-gu residents along with Odong Neighborhood Park.
