Typhoon Gaemi Makes Landfall in China... 630,000 Displaced Persons Reported

5 Dead in Taiwan... Worst Damage Since 2009

According to local Chinese media reports on the 26th, Typhoon Gami, which made landfall in China on the night of the 25th after passing through Taiwan, caused about 600,000 displaced people and property damage worth 2 billion yuan in China.

According to the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, the People's Daily, as of 6 a.m. on the day, the number of displaced people due to Typhoon Gami was counted at approximately 628,600 across 7 cities, 59 counties, and 721 townships (equivalent to towns and townships) in Fujian Province. The area of crop damage caused by the typhoon was 85.13 hectares (1 hectare = 10,000㎡), and the direct economic loss was about 11.46 million yuan (approximately 2.2 billion KRW). Chinese media reported that no casualties or missing persons have been reported so far.

In Fujian Province, which was directly affected by Gami, heavy rain ranging from 250 to 400 mm fell in various areas until 6 a.m. on the day. Currently, Gami is moving northwest at about 20 km/h, and Chinese meteorological authorities forecast that it will move to Jiangxi Province late at night and gradually weaken. Chinese authorities earlier downgraded the highest-level typhoon red alert issued for the Fujian region for the first time this year to an orange alert as of the morning of the day.

Before hitting China, Typhoon Gami struck Taiwan, causing 5 deaths and 531 injuries. Taiwan's second-largest city, Kaohsiung, was flooded, and the cumulative rainfall from midnight on the 24th to 9:30 p.m. the previous day exceeded 1,000 mm, flooding 2,261 buildings. The damage in the agricultural sector was estimated at 365.03 million New Taiwan Dollars (approximately 15.4 billion KRW).

This is considered the worst damage since Typhoon Morakot in August 2009, which caused damage worth 110 billion New Taiwan Dollars and 386 missing persons. Before landing in Taiwan, Gami struck the Philippines, where floods and landslides occurred, and foreign media reported that the death toll has risen to a total of 33 as of the day.
