Daegu Electronics Technical High School (Principal Yoo Byungwon) will be newly established as the "Daegu Semiconductor Meister High School" (tentative name) starting in 2025, following its selection in July 2023 as the first semiconductor Meister high school in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region under the government's semiconductor talent development policy.
The "Daegu Semiconductor High School" has set its vision as "cultivating young Meisters who will lead next-generation semiconductor technology in the era of the 4th industrial revolution" as an industry-demand tailored school in the semiconductor field, and plans to recruit 96 freshmen across 6 classes for the 2025 academic year.
Daegu Electronics Technical High School is holding an admission briefing session for Daegu Semiconductor Meister High School.
All students will live in dormitories and learn through industry-practice-centered education, including team teaching by both industry-part-time and regular teachers. The curriculum will cover semiconductor manufacturing and process control, production and quality management, semiconductor equipment production, and maintenance.
Enrolled students will study common subjects in the semiconductor field for one year, and upon advancing to the second year, they will choose their major between semiconductor manufacturing and semiconductor equipment based on their aptitude.
To transition into a semiconductor Meister high school, Daegu Electronics Technical High School received a budget of approximately 30 billion KRW from the Office of Education, Ministry of Education, Daegu City, and Dalseo District Office. Currently, all faculty and staff are working in collaboration with local industry-academic institutions to prepare for the school's opening, including curriculum development, teacher training, space reorganization, school name selection, dormitory expansion, and the establishment of practice labs.
Additionally, the school is pursuing business agreements with semiconductor companies, including employment contracts, to increase graduates' employment rates.
In July, Daegu Electronics Technical High School held three admission information sessions for third-year middle school head teachers, career guidance teachers, students, and parents, and plans to hold one admission information session each month from August to October.
Meanwhile, according to the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, the demand for high school graduate-level semiconductor personnel in Korea is expected to reach about 34,000 over the next 10 years, and global demand for semiconductor talent is also expected to continue.
Daegu City has announced plans to foster the semiconductor industry as one of the "five future strategic industries of Daegu," and with Gumi City near Daegu being designated as a semiconductor specialized complex under the National Advanced Strategic Industry Act in July last year, students will have even broader employment opportunities.
Kang Eunhee, Daegu Superintendent of Education, stated, "Semiconductors are a field that will continue to grow in the future, and I find it very meaningful to open the first semiconductor Meister high school in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region," adding, "We will spare no effort in supporting students to grow into talents who will drive our future forward."
