Jung-gu, Seoul, will produce 300 shared umbrellas using discarded banner materials.

According to Jung-gu, using discarded banners to make shared umbrellas results in a carbon reduction of 289g per umbrella. Additionally, since no new cotton or synthetic fibers are used for umbrella production, it reduces carbon emissions by 315g per umbrella.

The banners collected by the district numbered 5,118 in 2022 and 4,692 in 2023. Due to the impact of the 2022 22nd general election, the total reached 2,585 as of the end of May this year. The district plans to produce 300 umbrellas by the end of next month and distribute them to neighborhood community centers and welfare centers within Jung-gu, allowing visitors to borrow them for use as umbrellas or parasols free of charge.

Last year, 430 umbrellas were produced using 1,720 collected discarded banners and were placed in 15 neighborhood community centers, the Civil Affairs Passport Office, the Public Health Center Civil Service Office, and welfare centers.
