Earlier, on the 1st, in Busan, a man named Mr. B was reported for theft after taking an umbrella he thought was abandoned. On a rainy day, Mr. B did not bring an umbrella and saw one placed next to the elevator inside a building. Judging by its shabby appearance, he thought someone had abandoned it, so he used the umbrella and went home. However, a few days later, he received a call from the police saying he had been reported for umbrella theft.
The complainant, a young man, reported to the police station that he had lost an expensive umbrella. Mr. B immediately brought the umbrella to the police station, and the police laughed it off, saying, "It doesn't look like an expensive umbrella." However, later, the complainant contacted Mr. B demanding monetary compensation. The complainant insisted that taking the umbrella was clearly theft. Especially, the umbrella Mr. B took was a gift from an old friend, so the complainant was very shocked and claimed to have suffered psychological trauma.
He threatened that if Mr. B developed neurosis and had to visit a psychiatrist due to this incident, he could claim damages from the victim along with the theft charge and demanded 3 million won in compensation. Meanwhile, taking someone else's umbrella without permission can constitute theft and may lead to punishment. If found guilty of theft, under Article 329 of the Criminal Act, one can be sentenced to imprisonment for up to six years or fined up to 10 million won.
