The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit requested a total prison sentence of 5 years in the appellate trial for Prosecutor General Son Jun-sung, who was sentenced to 1 year in prison in the first trial over the so-called 'accusation solicitation' suspicion.
On the 24th, the Unit asked the court to impose such a sentence at the appellate trial decision hearing held by the Criminal Division 6-1 of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judges Jeong Jae-oh, Choi Eun-jung, and Lee Ye-seul). This is the same as the sentence requested in the first trial.
The Unit requested 3 years in prison for violating the Public Official Election Act and 2 years in prison for other charges including leaking official secrets. This is according to the separate sentencing provisions under the Public Official Election Act.
Prosecutor Son was indicted on charges of exchanging two complaint document images and real-name verdicts related to pro-government figures via the Telegram messenger with Kim Woong, then a candidate for the Future United Party (predecessor of the People Power Party), while working as the Investigation Information Policy Officer at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in April 2020, just before the 21st general election.
The main point of the 'accusation solicitation' suspicion is that through delivering such complaint documents, the Future United Party was solicited to accuse former Open Democratic Party proportional representative candidate Choi Kang-wook, former Supreme Council member Hwang Hee-seok, and then director of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation Yoo Si-min, among others.
