Population of 10,000 in Goryak-dong, Gwangyang 'About 5 Times Increase Compared to 5 Years Ago'

Congratulations to the 10,000th New Resident on the 23rd

Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Inhwa) announced that the population of Golyak-dong surpassed 10,000 as of yesterday (the 23rd), and held a celebration event at the Golyak-dong Office for the 10,000th resident to move in.

Mr. Kim Wooyoung (39), who became the 10,000th family in Golyak-dong, moved with his family of three from Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon City to Golyak-dong.

On the 23rd, Golyak-dong staff and heads of social organizations welcomed Mr. Kim Wooyoung’s family by taking commemorative photos and presenting gifts in the multipurpose room on the second floor of the district office.

At the welcoming ceremony, Mr. Kim said, “I am very happy to be the unexpected lucky person,” and added, “Now that I am a resident of Golyak-dong, I will contribute to the development of the community.”

The population of Golyak-dong, which was about 2,800 in the early 2000s, decreased to about 2,500 in December 2014 and about 1,900 in December 2019. However, it began to increase again due to active land development projects such as the Seonghwangdo District and Hwanggeum District urban development projects and the construction of apartment complexes.

In October 2021, the first apartment complex, Seonghwang Prugio The First, began occupancy, and the population was recorded at about 3,700, roughly doubling compared to the end of 2019. With the occupancy of Seonghwang Central Xi Apartment, the population surged to about 7,000 in 2023.

With the completion of Prugio The Central Apartment (Hwanggeum), Halla Vivaldi Central Mark Apartment (Hwanggeum), The Sharp Gwangyang Bay Cent Apartment (Hwanggeum), and POSCO The Sharp Primo Apartment (Seonghwang), the population of Golyak-dong finally reached 10,000 in July this year.

It is expected that with the future development of the Gubongsan Comprehensive Tourist Complex, experiential sculptures at the summit of Gubongsan, and a family-oriented children’s theme park, Golyak-dong?where industry, agriculture, tourism, and culture harmonize?will play a key role in the development of Gwangyang City.

Park Okbyung, head of Golyak-dong, said, “In a situation where all local governments are paying close attention to population changes, achieving a population of 10,000 in Golyak-dong is very meaningful,” and added, “We will do our best to provide proactive administrative services so that residents feel Golyak-dong is a neighborhood where they want to continue living.”
