"Court Will Do Its Best to Restore Public Trust"
Supreme Court nominee Park Young-jae identified "resolving trial delays" as an urgent task that the courts must address.
During his opening remarks at the confirmation hearing held at the National Assembly on the 24th, Park said, "If given the opportunity to handle appellate court trials, I will do my best to contribute my experience and knowledge to solving the complex issue of trial delays and help our courts regain the trust of the people."
He stated, "During my time as a judge, I had more opportunities than other judges to participate in judicial administration through the Court Administration Office and other roles," adding, "That experience allowed me to see trials and courts from the public’s perspective."
He also mentioned, "I was involved in introducing the one-on-one courtroom behavior consulting system for judges, which originated from the 2012 'controversial remarks by judges' incident. I believed that not only the validity of the results but also the appearance of fairness was important, and I feel rewarded that this system is still being successfully implemented today."
Furthermore, he emphasized, "In response to the rapid increase in insolvency cases, I take pride in having played a part in launching the Suwon Rehabilitation Court and Busan Rehabilitation Court in 2023, and operating the 'Comprehensive Task Force for the Prompt Handling of Insolvency Cases,' which helps citizens and companies facing economic difficulties recover."
Park said, "I became a judge with the desire to help those in need," and added, "I will strive to realize the valuable advice given today through my future work and that of the judiciary."
Since his appointment as a judge in 1996, Park has handled various trials including civil, criminal, and administrative cases at courts across the country for about 28 years. He has served as a professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, a deliberator at the Court Administration Office, director of the Planning and Coordination Office, and deputy chief of the Court Administration Office.
