Arrest of Major Criminals Including Voice Phishing Cases
The National Police Agency announced on the 24th that it repatriated a total of 219 fugitives abroad, the highest number ever in the first half of this year. The breakdown by country is as follows: China 49, Vietnam 35, the Philippines 34, Cambodia 16, and so on.
The National Police Agency has classified fugitives abroad into three categories?core, focused, and general?by comprehensively considering factors such as the severity of their crimes, the scale of damage to victims, protection of the common economy, and national policy tasks, as well as the possibility of arrest. They have concentrated their tracking and arrest capabilities accordingly. As a result, within four months of implementation, they arrested 29 important fugitives, including 14 in the core category. The total number of fugitives abroad under focused management is 631, with 60 in the core category, 192 in the focused category, and 379 in the general category.
The National Police Agency also achieved results in recovering criminal proceeds that had been transferred overseas. In August last year, at a currency exchange office in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi Province, two men of Tajikistan nationality threatened the owner with a replica gun, stole money, and fled; one of them escaped abroad. Through international cooperation with the Tajikistan police, they were made to stand trial locally, and approximately 51 million KRW out of the 85 million KRW in damages was returned to the victim.
Based on the performance analysis of the concentrated management system for major fugitives abroad, the National Police Agency began the second phase of focused management and tracking this month. The current focused management targets a total of 459 individuals, selected from core suspects not arrested in the first phase, suspects requested by field investigative agencies, and suspects who have drawn social attention.
A National Police Agency official stated, “To intensively track fugitives abroad, we plan to form joint investigation teams in cooperation with overseas law enforcement agencies and police attach?s, actively engaging in international cooperation activities such as collecting evidence with local law enforcement agencies and investigating the hideouts of wanted persons.”
