3.3% Increase Year-on-Year, Expected to Reach 1.3 Million TEU
Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Park Seong-hyun, hereinafter YGPA) announced on the 24th that "the container throughput handled by companies located in the Gwangyang Port hinterland complex in the first half of this year was recorded at 663,000 TEU."
This figure represents a 3.3% increase compared to 642,000 TEU during the same period last year, marking the highest volume since the opening of the Gwangyang Port hinterland complex.
YGPA cited the main factors for the increase in throughput at the hinterland complex as the achievement of 100% occupancy rate, leading to an increase in resident companies, and the full-scale commencement of operations by newly settled companies, along with active business activities.
Additionally, it was analyzed that the president’s direct on-site sales efforts and customer-first management, along with active administrative support through cooperation and communication with companies and resolving their inconveniences, greatly contributed to the increase in throughput.
In particular, after the completion of the expansion construction of the east and west hinterland complexes in the first half of this year, 10 additional companies moved in, and throughput is expected to increase further in the future.
YGPA is continuously promoting various communication channels between resident companies and the port authority, and strives to actively reflect the suggestions discovered through these channels in management and operations to provide support.
Moreover, companies located in the Gwangyang Port hinterland complex received 230 million KRW in support last year from programs such as financial and business model consulting and customized support systems for small and medium-sized enterprises in maritime logistics.
Furthermore, to expand sports facilities for employees of resident companies in the first half of the year, an international-standard tennis court was constructed in the west hinterland complex, and in early 2025, an 18-hole park golf course utilizing a 20,000㎡ site will be additionally established in the east hinterland complex to promote the health and leisure activities of workers.
President Park Seong-hyun said, “The throughput of the Gwangyang Port hinterland complex has reached an all-time high. This is thanks to the hard work of the resident companies, and we will continue to do our best to not only increase throughput but also revitalize the local economy through strengthening support policies for resident companies and securing leasable land to attract corporate investment.”
