"Vehicle Navigation Provides Real-Time Flood Risk Information"

Updates Completed for 6 Companies Including Naver
Plans to Add Disaster and Catastrophe Information Integration

A vehicle navigation service that provides real-time flood risk alerts during the summer season will be available.

"Vehicle Navigation Provides Real-Time Flood Risk Information" On the 9th, during the monsoon rains and with Typhoon Jangmi No. 5 approaching, the water level status of Gyeonggi Gwangju City Gyeangan Bridge is being displayed in real-time at the Hangang Flood Control Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Environment, and the Digital Platform Government Committee announced on the 23rd that all six participating companies have completed updates related to the "Navigation Enhancement for Preventing Road and Underpass Flooding Accidents" project.

Following KakaoNavi (on the 1st), Hyundai-Kia (on the 4th), and Atlan (on the 5th), the service has also launched on T map (on the 10th), Naver Map (on the 11th), and iNavi Air (on the 22nd).

Now, drivers can receive real-time flood risk information such as flood warnings and dam discharge alerts through navigation screens or voice guidance.

However, this service only alerts drivers to nearby dangers via screen and voice to encourage cautious driving; the navigation system does not provide alternative route guidance separately.

To receive flood risk information, users must update their applications (apps) to the latest version.

On the 10th, the Minister of Science and ICT, the Minister of Environment, and representatives of related companies and institutions signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen public-private cooperation through navigation enhancement to respond not only to flooding accidents but also to various disaster situations.

Based on this achievement, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to collaborate with related ministries and agencies to additionally link various disaster and calamity information such as detours for some controlled road sections during civil defense drills involving public participation (scheduled for the Eulji Exercise week in August), large fires, and landslides.
