Hwaseong-si, AriCell Fire Halts Resume Full-Scale Operation of Second Half of 8th Elected Term Administration

Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun Holds Directors Meeting... Discusses Key Tasks

Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province is showing signs of normalizing city administration operations that had virtually come to a halt for nearly a month following the Arisel factory fire accident on the 24th of last month. This is interpreted as reflecting Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun's determination that the recovery of administrative tasks directly related to the lives of one million citizens cannot be delayed any longer, separate from the accident response.

On the 23rd, Hwaseong City held a directors' meeting presided over by Mayor Jeong in the city hall situation room to discuss the tasks for the second half of the 8th term of the elected government. About 30 senior city officials, including heads of departments and offices, attended the meeting, where new tasks by sector were shared and discussions were held to achieve administrative performance.

During the meeting, key projects for the 8th term of the elected government were discussed, including ▲establishment of general districts for building a special city administrative system ▲strengthening industrial safety measures ▲building AI-based administrative services ▲creating Eco Farm Land ▲establishing cultural facility infrastructure ▲enhancing care service support ▲promoting railway and road network construction ▲expanding the Botanic Garden Hwaseong.

Mayor Jeong stated at the meeting, "In the second half of the 8th term, we will prioritize the most urgent task of establishing general districts. In addition, we will do our best to take a further leap toward Hwaseong City's hopeful future by achieving 20 trillion won in investment attraction, implementing Hwaseong-style low birthrate countermeasures, and building an AI smart city where imagination becomes reality."

He continued, "The most important thing in carrying out all plans is not a one-sided administrative perspective but viewing things from the citizens' standpoint," urging public officials to take an active attitude and do their best to satisfy the citizens.

Meanwhile, recently, both inside and outside the city, demands for normalization of city administration have increased due to the administrative power being concentrated on supporting the bereaved families after the Arisel factory fire. In fact, from the day of the accident until the 15th of this month, the city deployed more than 5,000 personnel in total to manage the accident site and support the bereaved families, causing significant disruptions to many administrative services.

It has also been reported that representatives of local social organizations in Hwaseong recently visited city hall to express concerns about delays in the normalization of city administrative services. They raised the need to resume town, township, and neighborhood events that had been suspended for nearly a month, separate from support for the bereaved families.

In particular, since the entire building has been used as the "Comprehensive Support Center for Bereaved Families" after the accident, demands for the normalization of the operation of the Modunurim Center, where citizen programs except for some have been suspended, are also increasing. The Modunurim Center is Hwaseong City's representative sports and cultural facility that operated an average of 210 citizen programs per month before the accident, and currently, only some programs such as the swimming pool and fitness center have resumed operation.
