Local Economic Sector Urges "Gwangju Private and Military Airport's Integrated Move to Muan"

The joint statement announcement event was organized to unite the hearts and minds of 18 local business organizations and entrepreneurs, including the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce, to promote regional economic growth and revitalize the local economy for future generations, regarding the urgent issue of relocating Gwangju's civilian and military airports to Muan.

In his greeting, Hansangwon, Chairman of the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce, pointed out, "Muan International Airport, equipped with the fifth-largest aviation and passenger facilities nationwide and serving as the gateway airport to the southwestern region, will be the only domestic international airport where the KTX stops starting in 2025. However, due to opposition from residents in the relocation area, conflicts between local governments, and a lack of government will to push forward, the situation has remained stagnant for over ten years without any progress."

He added, "The best way for Muan International Airport to leap forward as the gateway airport representing Gwangju and Jeonnam in the southwestern region is the integrated relocation of Gwangju's civilian and military airports to Muan."

Regarding the relocation area, he stated, "It will be reborn as a future city through the revitalization of the aircraft maintenance industry, fostering an air logistics hub, and developing nearby satellite cities," and predicted, "The site of the Gwangju military airport will create quality jobs by attracting future industries and global companies, enabling the younger generation in the region to live with dreams and hope within the local community."

The joint statement included contents such as ▲ actively promoting the integrated relocation of Gwangju's civilian and military airports ▲ securing government financial support and revitalizing related projects ▲ efforts to attract future industries and global companies to the former Gwangju airport site.
