110 Years of Exchange Connected by the Sea... Marine Civilization Cities Pohang and Ulleung

Marine Culture Hub Platform Hosts First Planned Project

Pohang and Ulleungdo Connected by Two Winds and Two Ocean Currents

The Pohang Cultural Foundation's Cultural City Center will hold the exhibition "Two Winds, Two Currents," which recreates the 110-year history of maritime cultural exchange between Pohang and Ulleungdo along the ocean currents, at the (former) Suhyup Cold Storage Complex Cultural Space until August 11.

110 Years of Exchange Connected by the Sea... Marine Civilization Cities Pohang and Ulleung 'Two Winds Two Ocean Currents' Pohang Cultural Foundation Exhibition Poster.

This exhibition is especially significant as it is the first exhibition prepared as a maritime cultural hub platform since the old Suhyup Cold Storage, once a symbol and forward base of Pohang's fishing industry, was transformed into a new cultural space.

This exhibition revisits the history of exchange between Pohang and Ulleung, which has continued for over 110 years since the opening of Ulleungdo. The exchange between Pohang and Ulleung is closely related to the development of shipping routes, ports, and cities.

This is also the reason why the two cities, sharing joys and sorrows both historically and geographically, have strengthened their friendly relationship. In particular, with the launch of the world's first 50-knot ultra-high-speed car ferry, the "Sunflower," the sea route connecting the two regions became faster, leading to the development of cultural exchange and the tourism industry.

The exhibition is composed of four sections: "Chibeomhaehyang," which captures the changes in maritime transportation and ports; "Mulchingching Saramchingching," which depicts the sea that connected the island and the mainland and the lives of the residents; "Ureungmureung," introducing the fishing culture and the beautiful scenery of Ulleungdo; and "Haechunchubeom," explaining the history of Ulleungdo appearing on Western nautical charts and maps.

In particular, the exhibition centers around 300 old historical photographs of Pohang and Ulleung connected by the sea, conveying the historical friendship and narratives of the two regions, and aiming to reveal the shared memories and emotions.

Additionally, a networking event scheduled for the 26th will bring together related institutions, researchers, business representatives, civic groups, and people with hometown ties who have led the exchange and cooperation between Pohang and Ulleungdo. This event will share the history of exchange mediated by the sea and serve as an opportunity to broaden future cooperation.

Lee Sangmo, CEO of the Pohang Cultural Foundation, stated, "We hope this first maritime culture exhibition at the (former) Suhyup Cold Storage Complex Cultural Space, which is being prepared as a maritime cultural hub, will serve as an opportunity to shed new light on the maritime culture of the East Coast."
