Full Commitment to Establishing Carbon-Neutral Pohang... Strategy Development Service Briefing Held On the 22nd, Pohang City held an interim report meeting for the 'Carbon Neutral Pohang Creation Strategy Establishment Project' at the City Hall Main Conference Room.

The meeting was presided over by Deputy Mayor Jang Sangkil and attended by department heads related to the proposal for the Carbon-Neutral Leading City Contest, the Pohang Carbon Neutrality Support Center, the service provider, private cooperation companies, the Eco-Friendly Industrial Complex Promotion Council, the Gyeongbuk Eastern Engineers Association, and the Pohang Sustainable Development Council. The attendees reviewed and gathered opinions on the proposed strategies.

Pohang City was selected as a preliminary target site in January this year for the Carbon-Neutral Leading City Contest, which is jointly promoted by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Accordingly, the city plans to participate in the contest.

A Carbon-Neutral Leading City is a city that proactively achieves or aims for carbon neutrality by reducing and absorbing carbon emissions based on carbon-neutral technologies. The contest will select two final cities in October this year, based on proposals for private sector cooperation, government support, and new projects that can reduce approximately 150,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

Pohang City, as a representative industrial city in Korea, is devising practical and effective reduction plans tailored to its greenhouse gas emission characteristics. Since establishing the Carbon Neutrality Task Force (TF) in November 2021, the city has been mobilizing all its capabilities in collaboration with companies, related organizations, and civic groups to be selected as a leading model for a carbon-neutral city.

Deputy Mayor Jang Sangkil stated, “Carbon neutrality is a responsibility that must be fulfilled by both companies and citizens in line with global trends. It is an essential element for protecting the ecosystem from the climate crisis and ultimately improving the quality of life for citizens. We will strive to discover carbon reduction projects in all sectors of the region to be selected as a carbon-neutral leading city.”
