Tasting Gimbap and Bindaetteok at Gwangjang Market
U.S. President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the Democratic presidential nomination has rapidly elevated Vice President Kamala Harris's standing. If Vice President Harris is chosen as the next presidential candidate, she will face former President Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Meanwhile, the intriguing connection between Vice President Harris's husband, 'Second Gentleman' attorney Douglas Emhoff, and Korea is being revisited. Emhoff previously formed a connection with broadcaster Hong Seok-cheon during a visit to Korea.

On May 12, 2022, Emhoff posted a photo of Seoul's Gwangjang Market on his personal social media (SNS). The photo featured not only Emhoff but also Hong Seok-cheon's face side by side. At the time, Emhoff commented, "I enjoy visiting places that bring communities together," adding, "The food, fabrics, and handicrafts at Gwangjang Market did not disappoint me."
Emhoff visited Korea as part of the U.S. congratulatory delegation attending President Yoon Suk-yeol's inauguration. During this visit, it appears he toured Gwangjang Market with Hong Seok-cheon. Hong is also a self-employed business owner who has operated restaurants for a long time.
Hong Seok-cheon also posted a photo with Emhoff on his personal SNS that day, saying, "I met a truly wonderful person. We experienced Korean traditional markets and food at Gwangjang Market, greeted merchants, and walked along Cheonggyecheon together, sharing many stories about Korean culture."
He continued, "He said his style is to open his heart and approach unfamiliar cultures and people warmly and to always approach people with humility," adding, "An adult with a wonderful mindset who opens his heart to everyone?I learned something precious today." It is also known that Emhoff tasted Gwangjang Market's representative foods such as bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) and gimbap that day.
Emhoff is a former member of 'DLA Piper,' one of the world's top three law firms. However, he resigned in August 2020 after his wife, Vice President Harris, was elected. This was a measure to prevent conflicts of interest in advance and to fully support his wife.
Emhoff is known for being devoted to his family. In a past interview with the 'JoongAng Ilbo' during his visit to Korea, he stated, "Truly being a man means helping women continue to work."
Meanwhile, Vice President Harris, supported by President Biden, posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter) on the 21st (local time), saying, "I will do everything to defeat (Republican candidate) Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda," and urged, "If you stand with me, please donate right now."
