Declaration of Candidacy Press Conference... Leading the Realization of Party Member Sovereignty Starting in Gwangju

Yang Bu-nam, a member of the National Assembly representing Gwangju Seo-gu Eul, has declared his candidacy for the position of Chairman of the Democratic Party’s Gwangju City Party Committee and has officially launched his election campaign.


On the 22nd, after registering as a candidate, Yang held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, stating, “I am determined to lead a landslide victory in the local elections and the restoration of the administration through a party member-centered and region-centered operation of the Gwangju City Party Committee.”

At this event, Democratic Party members, including basic and metropolitan councilors, gathered to support Assemblyman Yang’s candidacy.


He emphasized, “South Korea is currently facing a critical crisis,” and added, “The only way to resolve the political reality of persistent communication failures despite the crushing defeat in the general election and the collapsed livelihood of the people is to regain the administration.”


He continued, “I decided to run to make the Gwangju City Party Committee the center to lead a landslide victory in the 2026 local elections and to become a vanguard in achieving a change of administration in the presidential election.”


As the operational directions for change in the Gwangju City Party Committee, he promised: ▲ Realizing ‘party member sovereignty’ starting from Gwangju through party member-centered city party operations ▲ Restoring ‘trust’ of Gwangju citizens through field-centered city party operations ▲ Restoring ‘Gwangju (Honam) politics’ through people-centered city party operations ▲ Contributing to regional and national balanced development through policy-centered city party operations and promoting ‘Gwangju’s development’ by utilizing human networks ▲ Establishing an ‘innovative and unified Gwangju City Party Committee’ operated jointly by the eight regional chairpersons of Gwangju.


Candidate Yang Bu-nam stressed, “It is time for the spirit of Gwangju, which has been a beacon in dark and bleak moments of history, to once again become a lighthouse of hope illuminating South Korea,” and added, “Yang Bu-nam will walk the great journey of Gwangju together with the citizens of Gwangju and party comrades.”


Assemblyman Yang graduated from Damyang Technical High School and Chonnam National University, served as Chief Prosecutor of Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office, and retired as Chief Prosecutor of Busan High Prosecutors’ Office, becoming South Korea’s first ‘high prosecutor chief from a technical high school background’ and is also famous as a ‘dirt spoon myth’ in the legal community.


He entered politics as the ‘Legal Support Team Leader’ for Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, and served as the party’s Legal Committee Chairman, earning the nickname ‘Lee Jae-myung’s bodyguard,’ and is known as a representative ‘pro-Lee lawmaker.’


He ran for the Gwangju Seo-gu (Eul) district in the 22nd general election, was elected, and is currently serving on the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee.
