Internal and External Expert Committees to Review Overall Safety Management
Advancing Safety Management Including Protection of Foreign Workers in Blind Spots
Busan Metropolitan Corporation (BMC) recently held a Safety and Health Management Committee meeting to conduct a comprehensive inspection and provide advice on overall safety and health activities.
The meeting, held on the 16th, was attended by President Kim Yonghak, Union Chairman Cho Junwoo, and external experts in the field of safety and health. They focused on reviewing the performance of safety and health activities for the first half of the year, as well as checking compliance with safety and health-related legal obligations for 17 facilities managed by the corporation and 66 contracts, including third-party subcontracting and consignment, including construction projects. In addition, there was a session to provide advice on the overall key action plans for the second half of the year.
The committee members urged efforts to manage the safety of foreign workers at construction sites and to prevent heat-related illnesses in preparation for heatwaves, referencing the recent Hwaseong fire disaster case.
In particular, the committee highly praised the systematic disaster management using a digital-based safety management platform, which earned a Prime Minister's Commendation for workplace safety management, and called for the continued maintenance of the safety and health system.
Kim Yonghak, President of Busan Metropolitan Corporation, stated, "We will enhance safety and health activities and establish a thorough safety management system by reflecting the various opinions discussed at the Safety and Health Management Committee," adding, "We will focus BMC's administrative capabilities to ensure that an advanced safety culture can be expanded to all workplaces."
BMC is not classified as a key institution for safety and health management under the standards of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and is therefore not obligated to form or operate a Safety and Health Management Committee. However, to establish a top-priority safety management system, BMC has proactively formed and operated the committee with internal and external experts, including labor law specialists and professors in the field of safety and health.
Busan Urban Corporation's Safety and Health Management Committee members are pledging to establish a safety management system.
