"Democratic Party Quickly Rallying Around Harris"
As U.S. President Joe Biden steps down from the Democratic presidential candidacy and openly supports Vice President Kamala Harris, Seungmin Guk, a professor of political science at Michigan State University, predicted, "If the matchup changes to Trump versus Harris, (for the Democrats) it looks much more promising than Biden."
On the 22nd, Professor Guk said on SBS Radio's 'Kim Taehyun's Political Show,' "Young voters and voters of color have shown very low support for Biden," adding, "Harris is a Black woman and younger compared to Trump, so this could be a new opportunity for them to see." He continued, "If they can properly target the young voter base, and combine the advantages of being both the incumbent vice president and a presidential challenger, it seems more likely than Biden," and added, "There will be great uncertainty unfolding over the next three months."
Within the Democratic Party, new presidential candidates being mentioned include Vice President Harris, who is Biden's running mate, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The Democratic Party is expected to soon announce the candidate selection procedures and schedule.
Regarding the question that if Vice President Harris becomes the Democratic presidential candidate, the dynamic would be 'White male former President Trump versus Black and Asian American female Vice President Harris,' Professor Guk said, "It won't be easy (from Harris's perspective), so currently Harris's camp is discussing white governors as vice presidential running mates." He mentioned, "Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona are being mentioned," and added, "there is an atmosphere aiming to create a stable harmony between the presidential and vice presidential candidates."
He also analyzed that the Democratic Party is rapidly rallying around Vice President Harris. Professor Guk said, "The current atmosphere shows the Democratic Party quickly uniting behind Harris, with support declarations coming not only from former President Biden but also from members of both the House and Senate, and even former President Bill Clinton and his wife." He continued, "If other candidates want to run, they cannot be stopped," but added, "It seems that no strong next-generation candidate will emerge in order for the party to show unity and a cohesive team play."
